When I started undergrad (way back in the last millennium (1997)), I was introduced to email for the first time. But we didn’t have Outlook or Mail, we had to used TELNET and Pine (remember these wonders of the information super highway). My college was not exactly on the cutting edge of technology. However, we did have a couple of Mac computer labs which we could use to compose Pine emails and browse the web using the latest GUI browser (Netscape Navigator 3.0). Other labs on campus lacked the bells and whistles of Navigator and when using these labs we used TELNET and the text browser Lynx instead.
Believe it or not Lynx is still around and kicking. Anyone running Linux or Max OS X (Windows too I think) can easily download and install it and go to town. I am overcome with a warm feeling of nostalgia for those golden years of the late nineties every time I navigate the web with Lynx. In case you are not lucky enough to have a working copy of Lynx at your disposal, I’ve taken the liberty of posting screen captures of some of my favorite web 2.0 pages viewed with Firefox (left) and with Lynx (right) below. Click on the Lynx images for a larger view. Enjoy!
I prefer Lynx browser for all my web browsing needs. My 2800 baud connection doesn't support fancy banners and animated gifs so I get my fix text only. It's quite rewarding really.
