Six Originals and Their Original Remixes

equalizerSix songs paired with a remix… or cover, mash-up, whatever you want to call it. You can read some of my random thoughts below, and/or just stream the music from anywhere.fm (Note that the songs don’t play in the order listed. They’ll play at random, with possible repeats, and you’ll only get a few songs before you have to sign up - for free, mind you. But still, it’s nice to hear instead of read). Let me know your favorite songs with their variations on a theme in comments below.

Wonderwall (Oasis vs. Ryan Adams)

Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? - Wonderwall Oasis’ Wonderwall from (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?:
While I do think Noel Gallagher is a bit whiny in this ever popular song, I still love it. Maybe it’s the whiny sound that makes me want to throw my head back, sing at the top of my voice and cry. Sorry. Overshare…
Ryan Adams - Love is Hell - Wonderwall
Ryan Adams’ Wonderwall from Love Is Hell:
Heard this in a coffee shop. This is my favourite song right now (for personal reasons, I can’t tell you why - I overshared on the last one). Anyways, Ryan Adams (NO, for the umpteenth time, NOT Bryan Adams!!!) is absolutely brilliant on this one.

The Weight of My Words (Kings of Convenience vs. Four Tet)

Kings of Convenience - Quiet is the New Loud - The Weight of My Words The Weight Of My Words from Quiet Is The New Loud:
I first heard these guys on NPR while I was in Austin, Texas. You may know Erlend Oye from Royksopp or his solo efforts. His work on Kings of Convenience is very different from his other stuff. Softer. Quieter. And yet, somehow louder…
Kings of Convenience - Versus - The Weight of My Words (Four Tet Remix) The Weight Of My Words (Four Tet Remix) from Versus:
Four Tet’s remix of The Weight of My Words adds something that I never knew was missing in the first place. A friend of mine said this is the best remix album he’d ever heard, and since this is the best song on the album as far as I’m concerned, it must be the best remix ever!

Broken Drum (Beck vs. Boards of Canada)

Beck - Guero - Broken Drum from Guero: Slow and drunk. That’s what it sounds like to me. It’s the song they should play during movies when the actor/actress takes way too many drugs and is listening to the radio. This already sounds like a remix.
Beck - Guerolito - Broken Drum (Boards of Canada Remix) from Guerolito: Critics say that this remix album is messing with perfection, since Beck got it right in the first place. Well, here’s where they’re wrong. If you’ve never heard Boards of Canada, this is a great place to start.

Letting the Cables Sleep (Bush vs. N.O.W.)

Bush - The Science of Things - Letting the Cables Sleep from The Science of Things: This song reminds me of my early years in graduate school. Late nights, long conversations, good company…qualifying exams. Somehow the song itself captures the heaven and hell that was my life then.
Various Artists - Cafe Del Mar Vol 7 - Letting the Cables Sleep (the N.O.W. Remix) from Cafe del Mar Vol. 7: This whole CD is beautiful. Very chill. Now while the original wasn’t all that for me, I found myself coming back to this song a lot despite myself.

Turtle (Pilote vs. Bonobo)

Pilote - Antenna - Turtle from Antenna: Before I got into electronic music, I went up to the clerk at the CD store I was in (remember those?) and asked for a really good electronic album. He recommended this one. He said the song Turtle reminded him of his dog. Curious? Take a listen.
Bonobo - One Off Remixes and B-Sides - Turtle (Bonobo Mix) from One Off Remixes and B-Sides: Long live Bonobo! You like Jazz? Chill music? Just plain cool? Well, listen to Bonobo. And drink a martini while you’re at it. Bonobo smooths this one out nicely. That’s a great word for Bonobo. Smooth.

Walk on the Wild Side (Lou Reed vs. A Tribe Called Quest)

Lou Reed - Transformer - Walk on the Wild Side from Transformer: This is a classic. Don’t play this one with the kids around, though. I tend to not listen to words in songs, but these caught my ears.
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm - Can I Kick It? from People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm: Technically, this isn’t at all the same song. But A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Can I Kick It’ takes the original and makes it dance. My friends back in the day used to quiz me on A Tribe Called Quest’s music. I failed regularly. Now I think I could at least pass with a C.
