As I write this post I realize that I have owned the same alarm clock since 1991. My sister and I received identical Sony clocks for our birthdays that year, and I know that she upgraded to something more sophisticated long ago. Perhaps it is also time for me to take the plunge and find something new. Here I’ll list some of my favorite possibilities, and if you know of others that I might enjoy please leave a comment below.
Clocky Robotic Alarm Clock
If you have a little trouble getting up in the morning, and by that I mean, if you tend to hit the snooze bar one too many times, then this alarm clock is for you! Clocky is unique in that is will let you snooze for up to 9 minutes, but then it will jump off of your nightstand and wheel around your room, forcing you out of bed to turn it off. Clocky is quite sophisticated in that it can jump up to 2 feet, move on both wooden and carpeted floors, and its alarm system beeps in a random pattern, which will surely lure you out of bed. Color options include, almond, aqua, cocoa, and the latest, raspberry. This little cutie only costs $50 and is available here.
Flying Alarm Clock
The Flying Alarm Clock is another option if you are one to just hit the snooze bar and burrow under the covers for a little longer. This clock wakes you up with a loud shrieking alarm coupled with a little propeller-driven key that leaps off your nightstand. To turn off the horrible racket, you have to get out of bed and retrieve the key. Hmm, I don’t know about the rest of you, but being a short person I don’t think this would suit me. The clock is relatively inexpensive at only $24.99, but I think I would rather pay a little more to ensure my own sanity.
Carpet Alarm Clock
This next clock still forces you to get out of bed to turn it off; however, unlike Clocky and the flying clock, this carpet only requires you to step on it, not chase after it. This carpet clock is really just a small rug that you can place anywhere, but putting it too close to your bed may be less effective than putting it in some distant corner of your room! The rug contains an LCD screen which displays the time, and it is, of course, fully functional as an alarm clock (otherwise I wouldn’t list it here). Click here to see the product page, but I warn you that I was unable to find a price or an actual link to purchase. If anyone knows where I can find this thing please leave a comment below.
LED Alarm Clock Cubes
This whimsical alarm clock is comprised of four blocks, each displaying a single glowing number. The correct time is shown when the numbers are arranged in order; however, you can move each piece independently to stump your friends and make them wonder what the numbers mean. Each block has dimensions 2″ by 1.5″ by 1.5″, and the casing comes in either black or red with red numbers, or choose black casing with white numbers. I think I might like this one for a desk accessory as opposed to my main wake-up device. However, all of you may purchase this unique clock here for only $80.
Puzzle Alarm Clock
This alarm clock wakes you up by firing four puzzle pieces up in the air, and then it is your task to get the pieces and put them back in the alarm clock so that the clock will turn off. All that is required is 2 AA batteries and the desire to get out of bed, crawl around looking for plastic, and solve the same puzzle every morning. Oh yeah, don’t leave a window open or risk one of the puzzle pieces flying outside! Click here to buy this novelty item for $97.
aXbo Alarm Clock
This is one unique alarm clock! It monitors your sleep cycle throughout the night by wirelessly connecting to a sweat band you’re wearing, and then the device wakes you up when the body is entering a light sleep or wake-up phase. Apparently aXbo has some advantages over its competitors because this newest model doesn’t allow the alarm to become muffled when you tuck your hands under the pillow (sorry Sleeptracker). The aXbo also comes with three sleep-inducing melodies which automatically stop when aXbo notices that you’re asleep. To order this device equipped for two people it will costs approximately $300, and you can purchase your aXbo and other accessories here.
Mysterious Wooden Alarm Clock
At first glance this wooden clock doesn’t appear to be a clock at all, but instead just looks like a block of wood. You only realize it is a clock when glowing digital numbers appear as if by magic; all of the dials for time setting are discretely located on the back of the block. Unfortunately this clock is shipped with a plug compatible with outlets in the United Kingdom so an adapter would be necessary for use. Plus, the clock costs $195 so I think I’ll let all you UKers buy this one.
Digital Picture Frame Alarm Clock
This fun little device is not only a standard alarm clock but also functions as a digital photo frame which can show slideshows of your photos as well as videos. Additional features include an AM/FM digital radio with 20 presets and MP3 compatibility which can accept files via a memory stick. Yes, there is a USB port as well as slots for SD and MMC memory cards. The price seems right too, listed here at only $79.97 (on sale from $130).
Chumby Alarm Clock
The Chumby looks like a great option because it’s more than just an alarm clock. Chumby will connect to the free Chumby network via your WiFi connection, allowing you to catch up on what you need to begin your day. Listen to podcasts or internet radio, watch movies, catch the latest sports scores or RSS feeds, and also use the Chumby as a digital photo frame to view your flickr, PhotoBucket, MySpace, and Facebook photos. And oh yeah, it’s also an alarm clock! The Chumby is only about as large as a coffee cup and comes in basic black, pearl, and latte colors. You can purchase the Chumby here, for the semi-reasonable price of $179.95, and your purchase qualifies for free shipping.
Lightning Alarm Clock
If you love thunderstorms, then this clock is for you. The alarm feature is the work of static electricity sparking and arcing inside the glass tube. Although an AC adapter is included with purchase, you can also bring this fun item on camping trips or to Europe (without worrying about an adapter) by purchasing 1 AA battery to power it. Currently this little shocker is on sale for $48.99 (down from $59.99) here.
Ok, so I think that the Clocky is just too cute to pass up, especially in the new raspberry color! Is anyone else in the market for a new wake-up system? Let me know what you choose by leaving a comment below. If you liked this post be sure to subscribe here.
