Riley’s Summer 2008 Geek Movie Preview

ticketsSummer movie season is almost upon us, and I for one couldn’t me more thrilled! I always enjoy those comfy movie theatre seats and the relief of the air conditioning on those hot summer days. And let’s not forget the bonus features of popcorn, Twizzlers, and soda. I’m pretty sure I went to see some of these geek movies just because someone promised me a large tub of popcorn. But let’s get on with it, read below to catch a glimpse of some of this summer’s highly anticipated movies, and be sure to leave a comment if you think I have forgotten a flick that is high on your list.

Iron Man — May 2

IronManMovieWhat do we have here? Oh yes, another movie based on a comic book (ahem, graphic novel) character. Not being familiar with the comic myself, if I had to guess I’d say that Robert Downey, Jr.’s character is smart and suave and keeps his secret Iron Man identity hidden from love interest, I mean secretary, Gwyneth Paltrow. After Iron Man saves the world from imminent destruction he gets the girl. Who thinks I’m right?

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian — May 16

PrinceCaspian When I was in fourth grade I read both The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. I remember enjoying the first much more than the latter, so here’s to hoping the new movie doesn’t let me down. At least with Ben Barnes playing the lead role I can rekindle my school girl crush on the Prince.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — May 22

IndianaJones4Everybody break out your leather jackets and fur felt hats! Harrison Ford’s back as Indiana Jones, and he’s bringing Transformers’ Shia LaBeouf with him. Let’s hope the plot line and adventure scenes live up to all the hype and anticipation! Hmm, I wonder if there will be snakes.

The Incredible Hulk 2 — June 13

IncredibleHulk I’ve never seen the original Incredible Hulk movie, but the buzz about the sequel isn’t that promising. I am looking forward to Edward Norton’s portrayal of Bruce Banner, and I am sure the Zaphu guys can’t wait to see some monstrous green monsters battle it out on the streets of New York City, but the final verdict will be whether Hollywood plans for an Incredible Hulk 3 in a few years.

Wanted — June 27

WantedMovie Oh look, another movie based on a comic book. Of course, there’s the added geek-fantasy bonus of Angelina Jolie. The plot sounds like a cross between the Bourne Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum movies and The Skulls, but unfortunately James McAvoy isn’t nearly as attractive as Matt Damon or Joshua Jackson.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army — July 11

Hellboy2 Hellboy is back, and this time he’s got a subtitle! After reading some other blogs I get the impression that many of you Hellboy fans hope this sequel is better than the original. I am sure it will be, so long as Hellboy spends some of his time saving more kittens.

The Dark Knight — July 18

JokerDarkKnight I predict that this movie will be the blockbuster hit of the summer. This movie has more than a few things going for it, namely Christian Bale in the bat suit, and, of course, one of Heath Ledger’s final performances as the Joker. Added bonus: the flick will also be available for viewing via the IMAX experience.

The X-files: I Want to Believe — July 25

Xfilesmovie So I only watched the tv show when my college roommate had it on, and I didn’t see the first movie. What I hear; however, is that this film serves as a stand alone piece for all those kiddies who weren’t even out of diapers when Mulder and Scully first came on the scene. I’m quite curious to see how the film handles the struggle between faith and science, so this one is on my list for sure.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor — August 1

Mummy3 Here’s another example of a trilogy that probably should have stopped after the first installment. The only thing this movie has going for it is Jet Li as the mummy, but even this fails to be realistic. I mean c’mon, Li can’t get on with his bad self if he’s all wrapped up in mummy garb? Hmm, I guess not.

Coming Summer 2009

Star Trek — May 8

StarTrekThenandNow Ok so who else wanted Matt Damon to play a young James T. Kirk? I suppose I’ll give Chris Pine a chance, though I am most excited to see how Heroes’ Zachary Quinto behaves as young Spock, and then there’s also my personal favorite, Karl Urban as Bones. Only 374 days left (click here to download a cool countdown widget)!

G.I. Joe — August 7

GIJoeMaul Look out for this real American hero! This movie’s got Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, and the Rock, so how can it go wrong? Oh yeah and Ray Park (he kicked major butt as Darth Maul) as Snake Eyes! Plus it’s always fun to see Hollywood turn a cartoon icon from the 1980s into a live action superhero. Bring it on!
