A List of Great Ubuntu Applications

Google Desktop

Search for files, launch applications, and find information with the touch of a few keystokes.

Multi-platform file storage/syncing service. Up to 2GB is free, can pay for premium services.

Make free phone calls to other skype users.

Samba

Network utility Samba shares your files and folders with Windows computers on your network (and Mac computers that are configured to enable sharing with Windows).

GParted (disk partition utility)

GParted is an essential app for creating, destroying, resizing, moving, checking and copying partitions, and the file systems on your new Ubuntu machine. (use with care!)

Picasa

An iPhoto-like photo manager from Google.

Beagle

Beagle is the Spotlight/Google Desktop search app for Linux. Beagle indexes your files and lets you perform powerful searches.

Think Spotlight for Linux.

Think Quicksilver for Linux.

The popular Quicksilver alternative for windows has come to linux. (Beware: currently only supports 32bit installations)

A great free video player.

Firefox

The current king of the internet browsers.

Gimp

The free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. This comes installed in most Ubuntu distributions.

Open Office

Think Microsoft Office without all the crappy M$ parts. This app has really improved over the past few years into a true competitor for the Office Suite crown.

The best GUI for subversion that I have found for the Gnome desktop.

KeePassX

Think 1Password for Ubuntu. In fact, KeePassX saves important information (e.g., user names, passwords, urls, attachmets and comments) in one single database. You can even use Dropbox (see above) to sync this database across all of your computers!
