I am a BIG fan of Google’s Gmail service. It has the best webmail interface by far and offers nearly unlimited storage. Now that Gmail allows IMAP access I am using it as my primary email service via Apple’s Mail.app. I’ve configured Gmail to check all of my other email addresses via POP3. This is not only convenient since I have access to all of my email in one location, but it also reduces the amount of spam I see since the Google spam filter is very good. Note that you will need to maintain a list of contacts in Gmail to prevent real mail from being accidently labeled as spam. I use A to G.app to import my Apple Address Book contacts into my Gmail contact list. Continue reading to learn about the ideal settings for using Mail.app with Gmail via IMAP.

Watch hulu.com and abc.com Videos Without Commercial Interruption
By Riley Porter on Apr 17, 2008 within Apple, Entertainment | Comments
Even though the writers are no longer on strike I still watch plenty of tv shows and movies on hulu.com. While sites like Hulu and abc.com are convenient because I am able to watch some of my favorite shows whenever I’d like, one aspect of this format that I find particularly annoying is the random insertion of commercial breaks. These advertisements wouldn’t be nearly as disruptive if hulu managed to time them appropriately (they are always a second or two off), or if I didn’t need to ‘click to continue’ on abc.com. Luckily there’s a fix to this problem, and if you’re interested in maximizing your viewing pleasure by eliminating those pesky advertisements then read more. read more » »
The General Motors (GM) Volt and E-Flex: Transportation’s Future
By Sam Davis on Apr 15, 2008 within Technology | Comments

For many reasons, I have never been a big fan of General Motors. With the exception of the Corvette and the short lived EV1 electric vehicle, their products have never inspired much enthusiasm from me. Moreover, I am turned off by the company’s shameless use of patriotic rhetoric to market their vehicles. Many of their cars and trucks may be assembled in America (so are Toyota’s), but like most modern companies, GM has a thoroughly global supply chain. Wall Street is also not a big fan of GM these days. The company is habitually losing tons of money (largely due to spiraling costs associated with pensioned workers who’s medical costs alone are in the billions of dollars annually) and huge swaths of global market share to Toyota. Even so, I am eagerly purchasing some shares of GM and plan to buy more over the next few years. The reason is that I see big things happening at GM in the next 5 years. The company is trimming excess and showing signs of a desire to become a true transportation innovator. This renewed desire to innovate is symbolized by the energy the company is expending developing a new vehicle called the Volt, which is scheduled to hit the US market in 2010. read more » »
Clearwire - The Next Great Telecom?
By Sam Davis on Mar 20, 2008 within Technology | Comments

In the world of telecom behemoths like Verizon (market cap 100 billion) and AT&T (217 billion), Clearwire is a midget (1.8 billion). Chances are you have never heard of the company. But you will. And the competitors had better look over their shoulder. Here is why. Clearwire Corporation builds and operates wireless broadband networks in the United States and Europe based on mobile WiMAX technology. It was founded by cellular telephone pioneer Craig McCaw in 2003. Other cellular companies like AT&T and Verizon offer so-called broadband wireless connectivity (e.g., EDGE) but these services pale in comparison to the speed and versatility of WiMAX. read more » »

A Few Tricks for Getting the Most from the Safari (3) Web Browser [Mac Tip]
By Franklin Davis on Mar 11, 2008 within Apple, Tips | Comments
I recently gave up on Firefox 2 in lieu of Leopard because of stability and memory issues. Safari 3 was a huge leap forward from Safari 2 so I decided to give it a try. Overall, I’ve found that I’m enjoying using Safari as my main browser. The only part of Firefox that I miss is the wealth of available add-ons. Here are a few tips and tricks that I have found that make my Safari experience better. read more » »
L.A. Company Announces Gadget Buyback
By Bill Wagner on Mar 7, 2008 within Coffee Break | Comments
Are you one of those people who must have all the newest gadgets? You have to run to the store the night before something comes out so you can get it as soon as it hits the shelves? Then after a few months, you suffer from “Man, was that a stupid purchase” syndrome. Like when you bought minidiscs thinking they were going to be huge!? Or that HD DVD player that you bought because let’s face it, Blu-Ray just won’t be cheap enough and will lose the format war? Well, now a couple of companies are hoping to help people like us. TechForward Incorporated is a Los Angeles based company that is offering a “guaranteed buyback” plan for gadgets. They actually call it “a wide-ranging service line to help retailers, product manufacturers, and consumers overcome obstacles to more frequent upgrade purchasing of popular consumer electronics product categories.” read more » »
Ten Alarm Clocks Perfect for Sleepy Geeks
By Riley Porter on Feb 22, 2008 within Coffee Break, Lists | Comments

As I write this post I realize that I have owned the same alarm clock since 1991. My sister and I received identical Sony clocks for our birthdays that year, and I know that she upgraded to something more sophisticated long ago. Perhaps it is also time for me to take the plunge and find something new. Here I’ll list some of my favorite possibilities, and if you know of others that I might enjoy please leave a comment below. read more » »
Modu Announces New Transforming Cell Phone
By Bill Wagner on Feb 21, 2008 within Coffee Break | Comments

Let’s face it. Right now, there are a lot of mobile phones on the market. Phones for music, phones for texting, phones for email, and every now and then you can find a phone for talking. The problem is that because of all the contracts we’re forced to sign, we can only afford one phone at a time (unless you have money to throw away, and then you need to think about starving kids or something because you shouldn’t be buying another phone). What if I need to make a long trip and want a phone that plays music? Then, the next week, I want to wear my leather pants out to the club and need a really slim phone? But then, I’m going to family reunion and I need a really good messaging device? Well, an Israeli start-up company, modu, is hoping to change the way you think about and buy cell phones. read more » »
The Top 15 Geek Movies of All Time
By Bill Wagner on Feb 19, 2008 within Entertainment, Featured, Lists, Reviews | Comments
Since the Oscars are just around the corner, I thought we’d nerd it up a little before everyone starts thanking all the writers, their parents, the writers, their spouses, the writers, etc. I’ve tried to compile a list of movies that every self-respecting Nerd should see. While there are a lot of great films out there, the winners clearly stepped up their game. Not all of these are “science” related, but that means they just had to be that much better to make the list. So, without further ado, “The Oscar goes to … read more » »

25 Useful Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows XP Users
By Bill Wagner on Feb 5, 2008 within Featured, Tips, Windows | Comments
If you’re like me, your experience when you sit down at the computer is more of a ‘point and click’ thing than a ‘carpal tunnel generating’ thing. However, there are times (rare maybe) that I spend a little more time at the keyboard, and I find it irritating to have to scroll through a menu or use the mouse. Franklin gave a pretty comprehensive list for OS X users here, but I don’t have a Mac so it wasn’t as useful for me as it probably was for Steve Jobs. So for the Windows XP users out there (and Bill of course!) I’ve comprised a list of the top 25 keyboard shortcuts that I use just about daily. This is by no means a complete list of shortcuts, just ones that I find pretty handy (he he). read more » »
Apple Grows a Pair [Humor]
By Sam Davis on Feb 5, 2008 within Apple, Coffee Break | Comments

Last year, Apple realized impressive gains in notebook sales due in part to the widespread appeal of Apple’s OS X Leopard operating system and a switch to powerful Intel processors. Yet, jittery investors have sent Apple’s stock plummeting over 35 percent in recent weeks over concerns that the company’s recent income growth will not be sustainable. These concerns are due in part to analyst estimates that Apple has saturated the market within its target demographic, namely urban professionals, academic snobs, metrosexuals, and Democrats. Meanwhile, Apple’s marketing vision has little or no appeal among the highly coveted demographic of professional wrestling watching, beer drinking, truck driving, meat eating men between the ages of 18 and 24. One Wall Street report estimates that while 98 percent of Barack Obama supporters own at least one iPod, only 1 in 10,000 NASCAR fans have even heard of Apple Computer. read more » »

5 Must-Have Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Sets
By Bill Wagner on Feb 1, 2008 within Books, Entertainment, Reviews | Comments
So the writers strike has got you down, huh? You checked out some of the shows that Riley suggested but you just weren’t into them. You sympathize with the writers and their plight. Well, what better way to pay tribute to writers and their craft than to read!! Here are few books that can take your mind away from the everyday. I’ve composed a list of 5 series that I’ve read that will do just that without you having to leave your lazy boy…except of course to drive to the local library. However, these are all ‘Must-Haves’ for your collection so you might just want to order them via the links below. In order to keep myself from revealing too much, I posted brief descriptions/reviews from people that get paid to do it. Also, some of the reviews have been shortened because they were just too long! I’ve tried to rank these by quickest reads, which for me translates to complexity of plot lines etc. Here we go. read more » »
